The quick actions of a Middletown Borough Police officer Saturday morning helped save a Borough woman’s life.
Police said Middletown Sergeant Rick Heister was first on the scene when a call came in to assist EMS in the 200 block of West Main Street. Upon arrival, Heister found the 49-year-old woman lying face up on the floor, struggling to breath.
Heister applied the automated external defibrillator carried in his vehicle and used it to check for a pulse. The device indicated no pulse, and the woman continued to struggle to breath. As Heister was preparing to ventilate the woman using a bag valve mask, the AED advised Heister to administer a shock, followed by cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
As Heister began CPR, the Middletown Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene. Firefighters assisted Heister with CPR until EMS arrived and began advanced life support care.
The woman, whose name is not being released, was in fair condition Wednesday at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, according to a hospital spokesperson.
