The Lebanon County Drug Task Force made two arrests for synthetic marijuana last week and the District Attorney issued a stern warning. Jared Brandt, 26, of 1110 Guilford Street, Lebanon, was arrested on April 23rd. Police say they found a quantity of synthetic marijuana, new packaging and a heat sealer during a search of Brandt’s residence.
Brandt was taken into custody and charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver Synthetic Marijuana, Possession of Synthetic Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Designer Drug as well as a parole violation. He was arraigned before MDJ Carl Garver and ordered held in the Lebanon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Also on April 23,  Andrew Allie, 35, of Annville,  was taken into custody in the 1100 of Mifflin Street, Lebanon while allegedly attempting to deliver 550 grams of synthetic marijuana with a street value of $5000.00 to Brandt. Allie was charged with Criminal Attempt –Delivery of Synthetic Marijuana, Criminal Use of a Communication Facility, Possession of Synthetic Marijuana, and Possession of a Designer Drug and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Allie was transported to the Lebanon County Central Booking Facility where he was processed and arraigned before MDJ Carl Garver and ordered held in the Lebanon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $20,000 bail.

District Attorney David J. Arnold Jr. warns it is illegal to possess, sell, offer to sell, or manufacture synthetic drugs and that doing so subjects the possessor to enhanced penalties under the designer drug statute. The most common ingredient in these drugs are versions of cathinone, which can have severe mental and physical effects on users.

Arnold also noted since April 2015, there have been approximately 400 overdoses involving synthetics along the East Coast between New York and Alabama, with a noticeable increase in cases at our local hospitals as well as police related incidents. The physical effects of these substances can include dizziness, high blood pressure, red eyes/dilated pupils, nausea, vomiting, seizures, paranoia, anxiety, depression, nose bleeds and chest pains in addition to long term health risks including breathing problems, cognitive impairment and psychosis.
