Atlanta, Ga. — A woman was shot by police in Downtown Atlanta Thursday after she opened fire on officers while in the back of a patrol car.

Police say the woman was detained in the back of the police car when she shot at two police officers sitting in the front of the car.

The officers immediately jumped out of the patrol car and returned fire, striking the woman, according to police.

The woman was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where she later died.

The shooting occurred near Underground Atlanta on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at Pryor Street.

Witnesses at the scene told CBS46’s Melinda Roeder that several shots were fired and that a lot of people were running around.

The woman who was shot and killed has not been identified.
