BALTIMORE, Md. — The Baltimore Police Department will have body cameras by the end of the year, mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake promised during a press conference Wednesday morning.

At the same press conference, Rawlings-Blaker also announced that she had joined the City Council president in requesting a Department of Justice civil rights full pattern and practice investigation into the city’s police department.

The mayor said she discussed this request with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Tuesday, who is in Baltimore with a team of DOJ officials investigating the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, and expects an answer soon.

A DOJ spokesman confirmed that they had received they mayor's request.

"The Attorney General is actively considering that option in light of what she heard from law enforcement, city officials, and community, faith and youth leaders in Baltimore," Dena Iverson said in a statement.
