EAST DONEGAL Twp., Pa – A passing motorist alerts a sleeping family that their home was on fire this morning in Lancaster County. The family of four escaped without harm. It happened at about 7 am on the 300 block of Kelly Lane, just off Donegal Springs Road in East Donegal Township, just outside of Mount Joy Borough. The home was engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived on the scene.
About 50 volunteer firefighters from the Mount Joy Fire Department and neighboring fire companies battled the blaze. The heat of the fire was so intense two adjacent homes one on each side suffered moderate damage to their exteriors.
The fire was brought under control in just less than hour, but not before it virtually destroyed the home. The fire is believed to have started in the outside rear of the home. The exact cause is under investigation.
The affected family is staying with family and friends. No firefighters were injured.
