HARRISBURG, Pa. - After serving the Harrisburg community for 22 years, a city police captain is saying farewell to the force. Mayor Eric Papenfuse and Police Chief Thomas Carter honored retiring Captain Colin Cleary at City Hall during a special ceremony Wednesday.

Cleary joined the police force in 1993.  He worked in the Unformed Patrol Division and as a patrol/narcotics detection K-9 handler on the platoons and Power Shift, which is now called Street Crimes. Cleary also worked as supervisor of the Power Shift and in 2004, he was promoted to sergeant. In 2009, he was assigned as the training coordinator for the bureau. In 2009 he was promoted to Acting Captain, and in 2010 he was appointed Captain of Technical Services. On March 10, he was assigned to command the Uniformed Patrol Division.

He says it will be tough leaving the other officers behind.

"These people are my coworkers; they are my friends," Cleary said. "They're people I've been involved in life and death situations with. They keep me safe, they help me return to my family every night, and I worry about them. I worry about their physical and mental well-being, and so it's bittersweet for me."

Mayor Papenfuse also  announced the resignation of the senior grant writer Errol Newark who has helped to bring millions of dollars in grants to the city.
