WASHINGTON — Amtrak will be installing inward-facing video cameras to improve safety of the Northeast Corridor, by the end of 2015. These cameras will be added to the specific fleet of ACS-64 locomotives.
Amtrak states that, “these systems will be another tool for Amtrak and industry regulators to monitor locomotive and engineer performance.”
“Inward-facing video cameras will help improve safety and serve as a valuable investigative tool,” said Amtrak President & CEO Joe Boardman. “We have tested these cameras and will begin installation as an additional measure to enhance safety.”
The locomotives receiving these cameras will power all of the Northeast Regional and Long distance trains from Washington, New York, and Boston. The Keystone Service between New York, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg, Pa will also get the cameras.
Currently, Amtrak has outward-facing cameras on locomotive and systems to monitor the locomotive and engineer actions.
This all coming after the deadly Amtrak train derailment that happened just outside of Philadelphia earlier in May.
