UNIONTOWN, Pa. —  An ice cream man is lucky to be alive after an armed robbery attempt on his truck in Fayette County.

Franklin Swaney says he had just finished serving a couple of customers Sunday night when, “Next thing I know, I see a purple gun in my face.”

Swaney says his customers were walking away and, “The girl says to me, ‘Give me the money.’ I stopped and looked at her like, ‘Yeah, that’s going to happen.'”

The young woman tried to steal one hundred dollars saying, “Give me the (expletive) money. Give me the (expletive) money. Pick it the F up. Do you think I’m playing with you? Do you think this is a game?’ The standard, ‘I saw it on TV and this is my armed robbery spiel.”

When she demanded the money again Swaney said he flung the cash to the back of the truck. The girl appeared upset by his actions and Swaney said, “She just made a little head gesture like she was disgusted, and she looked away from me. That’s when I chopped down on her hand, where the gun was.”

The would be robber fell to the ground, but she wasn’t finished just yet.

“She was gone, I thought that was the end of it.” Swaney said,  “The next thing I know, I’m lying on the floor of the truck because I was hit by shrapnel. I started feeling around. I felt blood and thought, ‘Please, God. Don’t let there be a hole there.'”

Swaney was not shot, but had minor injuries from shrapnel. The shooter was able to get away.

“Who comes across like, ‘I didn’t get the money, so let’s add attempted murder to the list of things to do today.'” Swaney said, “There were kids and adults both. I mean, when she opened fire, there were still people in the vicinity.”

No one else was hurt during the incident, and police say they are following up on some tips.
