Harrisburg, Pa. – Today is gun violence awareness day and one lawmaker wants to dedicate the entire month of June to the cause.

State Senator Art Haywood, a democrat from Montgomery County, joined activists and community leaders as well as family members of victims at the state capitol in Harrisburg.

Haywood says Americans are 20 times more likely to die by gun violence than citizens of any other developed country. He adds, “We must do our part here in the legislature and in the communities across the commonwealth to discuss what we can do to make our neighborhoods safer. We must remain vigilant regarding this public health epidemic.”

Increased awareness is the first step for starting a constructive, bipartisan conversation on how to deal with the issue, according to Haywood. A number of the people at the event are in favor of second amendment rights and responsible gun ownership but believe something has to be done to make communities safer.
