YORK TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Pete Carman of York County usually buys a case at the beer distributor, but appreciates the convenience and variety now that he can also buy 12-packs.

"I normally buy the case but if we're having company, I don't like to buy the case of something I don't like to drink, but my company may like it, so I'll buy the 12- pack," he said.

For the first time since the prohibition era, distributors can sell smaller amounts than cases or kegs of beer. The change is helping the Beer Barn at Queensgate Shopping Center in York Township stay competitive, especially with some grocery stores also selling beer.

"It definitely helps us keep our feet in the door. We look at it as we share business. They can go next door and try one, and if they like it, they come back here and buy it in bulk. They've [12-pack sales] done very well for us," said Tiffany Snedegar, who works for Beer Barn.

In March, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approved the change, among several other to the states liquor code, all of which make the way you get beer more convenient.

"A lot of other states run differently than Pennsylvania. In any other state all you have to do is take about ten steps and you have beer everywhere. So they are starting to make changes in Pennsylvania to make it like other state I believe," said Snedegar.

Carman agrees with the change, but thinks Pennsylvania should take a step further and privatize the whole system.

"I think the state of Pennsylvania is very antiquated in many ways, but in the liquor and beer laws they need to make it more convenient for consumers," he said.
