HAZLET, N.J. —  When high school senior Maxwell Barrett was deciding his yearbook quote -he wanted to go out ‘with a bang’.

But the New Jersey teen almost didn’t get his quote published because he says a yearbook supervisor was concerned about ‘shock value.’

The quote said: “‘Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.’ -Unknown”

Barrett says he was already ‘out’ as gay to many people, and although he suspected they knew, he had never officially told his parents.

“It was just more of a confirmation to [my parents] than a coming-out story,” Barrett said. “They said it was the best one in the yearbook and that they were proud of me.”

Barrett says he has received support and  congratulations from both students and teachers.
