MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. — A U.S. Army veteran is spending his Fourth of July taking a walk across the country, and his four-legged friend is joining him on the journey. Strangers coast to coast are greeting Michael Roberts with his American flag overhead and his dog ‘Boots’ by his side. His nephew is also joining them on the trip. The trio went through Montgomery County, PA on June 22nd.

Roberts set off three months ago from his home in Central Wisconsin on a mission to raise awareness about the problems veterans face after they return home from combat.

Roberts says, “On November 15 of last year, of 2014, I tried to commit suicide. I tried to OD. And that didn’t work. I woke up the next day very sick and with a bad headache. And while I was unconscious I just had a dream. And I just saw myself walking.”

He’s walked 1,000 miles so far, through seven different states and says he’s just getting started. Michael Roberts has started posting his 8,000-mile journey on Facebook.
