HARRISBURG, Pa.  – On Monday, August 3, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will close the Mulberry Street Bridge in Harrisburg to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic for two weeks. The closure is necessary so that the contractor working on the bridge can apply an epoxy-aggregate overlay to protect the new bridge deck from water penetration and deterioration. The bridge is scheduled be reopened to traffic by August 17. If possible, depending on the contractor’s progress and good weather, the bridge could reopen sooner. A detour that follows 13th Street, Market Street and 4th Street will be in place.

The 18-span Mulberry Street Bridge was originally built in 1909. It connects the Allison Hill section of Harrisburg to the Harrisburg Transportation Center and the downtown area. It spans Cameron Street, Amtrak and Norfolk Southern rail lines, and Paxton Creek.

A two-year, $12.2-million project with Neshaminy Constructors, Inc. of Feasterville, Pennsylvania, has been underway since March 2014 to rehab the bridge. The bridge was closed to traffic last year as construction crews replaced the old bridge deck. In addition, new concrete barrier between the roadway and the sidewalk was installed, as well as new pedestrian railing, new railroad protective fencing, and new bridge lighting and drainage. The work this year has focused on making substructure and superstructure repairs. The overall project should wrap up by the end of this year.
