An early morning fire destroyed a downtown York building.
The two-alarm fire broke out just before 4:45 Thursday morning at the old Manor Club building located at Manor and Lafayette Streets.
Chad Deardorff is the Deputy Chief of the York City Fire Department. He said the building, which has been vacant for several years now, had a red ‘X’ on it.
That means it is structurally unstable and unsafe for anyone to go inside, including firefighters.
Because of that, crews were forced to take a defensive approach when fighting the fire, meaning they had to let it burn.
Most recently, the building was used as a thrift store for homeless veterans.
Deardorff said it was filled with furniture, clothing and household goods which made the fire spread faster and burn hotter.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
