YORK, Pa. – The unexpected discovery of mold has delayed the opening of the York City School District’s Hannah Penn K-8 School. Superintendent Dr. Eric C. Holmes posted a notice on the district’s website explaining the situation to parents:

Parents and Guardians of Hannah Penn Students,
The opening of Hannah Penn K-8, originally scheduled for Monday, August 24, for students in grades 1-8 will be delayed until Wednesday, August 26. Recently, while conducting routine maintenance, we discovered surface mold in a few locations around the building. We believe the mold was a result of our air conditioning system being offline over the summer combined with the high outside humidity.

Numerous air quality tests have been conducted and consistently show that there are no air quality concerns. In an effort to be proactive and to minimize the possibility of a recurrence of the mold, the district will be replacing all air conditioning pipe insulation with a material that is more mold resistant. The scope of the repair work requires the HVAC to be shutdown, therefore causing school to be delayed.
All students, including Kindergarten, will report to school on August 26, 2015 for their first day.
We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your support. Please note that we treat the health and safety of our students and staff as our top priority.
