HARRISBURG, Pa. - Lawmakers and the Humane Society announced legislation designed to stop people from leaving pets in vehicles. They met at the Humane Society of Harrisburg. The Motor Vehicle Extreme Heat Protection Act is meant to keep animals safe.

"No one wants to walk past a car in a parking lot and see a dog in there and all of us probably cringe when we see that. This is a step in the right direction but there's no substitute for educating our public and raising the awareness and we can change behavior patterns simply by educating our public," said State Representative Kevin Schreiber.

The act would give police officers, emergency crews or humane officers the authority to remove a dog or cat from a vehicle if they believe the animals are suffering or in danger.  Whomever removes the animal would not be liable for any damages.
