YORK, Pa. -Kids are getting their trophies for participating in the annual fishing derby at Kiwanis Lake. For many, it’s a tradition to go to the lake on Labor Day. This year participation was lower than normal.

Organizers say it is likely because they did not have any vendors in the park this year and they will not be having fireworks.

"York Adams Central Labor Council actually pays to put on the derby and the parade. The way I understand it, the funds were not available from the city to do the festivities this year," said Nancy Stough  from York Adams Central Labor Council.

Park Bureau funding was cut and to save $6,000. The city chose not to hold the event.  People who have been coming to Kiwanis for years  are disappointed.

“They need to start bringing more people down here. Start getting more interacting with the fishing especially, for these inner city kids. Bring them down here, get them fishing, that gives them something to do instead of being out in the streets," said Elzie Robinson who has been fishing in Kiwanis for 10-15 years.

People are hopeful the vendors and fireworks will be back next year.
