CHESNEE, SC — A high school senior said she was suspended after wearing an ‘offensive’ t-shirt to school.

Printed on Briana Popour’s shirt, was the message “Nobody knows I’m a lesbian.”

Briana , who is openly gay, said she was told, “You need to change your shirt or go home.”

“I’ve worn this shirt before and nobody’s ever said anything,” Briana told WSPA.

Briana said she was told that her shirt was disruptive, but she said there’s nothing against displaying sexual orientation in the dress code handbook.

The district responded to an e-mail from WSPA saying the shirt was  “offensive and distracting.” The  school’s dress code policy says, “Clothing deemed distracting, revealing, overly suggestive or otherwise disruptive will not be permitted.”

Briana says that this was about more than just a shirt, and gay teens shouldn’t be afraid of their identitiy.
