HANOVER, Pa.–Police and an Army explosives team responded Wednesday afternoon to a report of an explosive military device found in Hanover.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., a 40mm military grenade was found in storage along the 100 block of Pleasant Street in Hanover. Police said the grenade was found in the gear of a 28-year-old Hanover man, who is a military service member. The grenade had been in storage since his return from a previous combat deployment, according to police reports.

Investigators said the discovery was made while he was preparing to move his belongings to his next duty station.

Officers responded to the scene along with members of an Army Explosives and Ordnance Disposal Unit from Dietrich, Maryland. The EOD team safely recovered the grenade and took it to an area off Blettner Avenue in Conewago Township, Adams County. The grenade was detonated around 6:45 p.m.

Police said the controlled detonation created a loud explosion that could be heard throughout the area.
