HARRISBURG, Pa. - Cure Violence is a science based model that looks at violence as a health issue. The program was created in Chicago about ten years ago. In almost all sites, where it has been used, homicides and shootings have decreased by 25% to 80%.
The model looks at violent behavior as a contagious disease. In practice, people within communities are employed. They are trained in mediation, intervention and other forms of conflict engagement. It is a way to create a constant physical presence in neighborhoods.
In order to bring the practice to Harrisburg, a task force is being formed. They want to implement it as soon as possible.
