LOWER ALLEN TOWNSHIP, Pa.–Several roads were shut down Friday afternoon after a major gas leak was detected in Cumberland County.

The gas leak occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. at Cedar Avenue and St. John’s Road in Lower Allen Township. Authorities said a contractor working in the area accidentally struck a gas line.

A two block radius was evacuated. By 2 p.m. most of the people who were evacuated were allowed to return to their homes.

Currently, Cedar Avenue and St John’s Road remain closed. All other road are back open.

Power has been restored to the area and the leak has been stopped.
