Sexting Investigation in Lebanon County

CUMBERLAND  COUNTY, Pa. – District Attorney David Freed confirms that an investigation of “sexting” is underway at Big Spring High School in Newville.

In a late afternoon release, the DA says Newville Police became aware late last week of the possibility that sexually explicit images of minor students had been or were being disseminated by other students at Big Spring HS.

Freed emphasized that the investigation is in its very early stages. He confirmed that yesterday, Newville Police executed search warrants at the school and seized numerous mobile devices believed to contain evidence of potential criminal activity.

“This investigation is in its very early stages. To the extent that it involves juveniles, their identities will be protected as provided for in Pennsylvania law. While I understand that this type of behavior has been much in the national news lately, it is not new for Pennsylvania or Cumberland County. Along with my colleagues across Pennsylvania, I spent many hours several years ago assisting with the drafting of a statute to address just these types of situations. As a result we have a statute that appropriately draws a line between youthful indiscreation and criminal activity. as with any invstigation, we will pursue the evidence where it leads and make an appropriate decision when the investigation concludes.” Freed stated.

Pennsylvania law defines “Sexually Explicit Image” as a lewd or lascivious visual depiction of a minor’s gentials, pubic area, breast or buttocks or nudity, if such nudity is depicted for the purpose of sexual stimulation or gratification of any person who might view such nudity.
