Third Annual Lancaster Catholic Carnival

LANCASTER, Pa. – Lancaster Catholic High School announced Tuesday that they will not host their annual carnival in June of 2016 following a 34-year stretch of summer carnivals.

In the past carnival efforts raised almost $2.5 million for athletic programs and other worthwhile LCHS initiatives, all while serving as a summer meeting place for numerous students, alumni and friends. However, declining revenue and community interest over the past several years has led to the decision to retire this tradition.

“Over the past several years, unfortunately, both our costs and the competition from other entertainment opportunities in Lancaster County have increased,” said Tim Hamer, President. “At the same time, much of our committed volunteer structure and general carnival interest throughout the area has decreased.”

The decision came following several LCHS administration meetings, consultations with major carnival constituents and a survey that was administered to the LCHS community.

“We have tried a variety of approaches to reverse the declining trend, yet, despite our efforts, the last carnival only realized a quarter of the profits which were earned in the “glory days” of this event,” said Terry Klugh, Principal.

The decision was made considering the school’s entire budget, and a replacement event or series of events have been planned to replace this revenue item. The change will in no way affect tuition costs.

“We are excited to explore new event options that will bring our entire LCHS community together and raise resources for our students, faculty and staff,” said Hamer.

School officials plan to honor the revered carnival tradition by creating an archival section in the Memorial Hallway of the Berger Gym lobby that will include carnival mementos.
