DOVER, Pa. -- York County is on track to have more heroin deaths this year, despite people having better access to Narcan.

County Coroner Pam Gay met with people at Dover Area High School to update them on the heroin epidemic.

She said the number of suspected deaths from heroin use had declined during the summer months, but picked back up in September and October.

"We had a couple weeks ago where we had 7 in 7 days, which is the worst it's been," Gay said. "October was our highest month for deaths since last December with 12 heroin- related deaths. You can figure the math, we average 2-3 a week."

Gay and local police officers encouraged people to pick up a supply of Narcan.

Last month, Governor Tom Wolf enacted an order making the life-saving medication available over-the-counter at pharmacies across the state.

In addition, many first responders are equipped with Narcan.
