MANTUA, UT  —  A woman and her two dogs are lucky to be alive after falling into icy water in Utah.

The woman was taking her dogs for a walk around a reservoir, when one of the dogs went out onto the ice and fell in.

She tried to rescue her dog, and ended up in the water herself.

There aren’t many homes near the reservoir, and normally a water operator only checks the area once a day in the morning.

For some reason worker, Thomas Braithwatie, happened to be a few hours late to check on the reservoir. Just in time to see the woman in the water.

“All I could do was watch her I couldn’t go out there I couldn’t get any closer so immediately I called 9-1-1,” Braithwatie told KSL.

The woman had managed to get her dog out of the water, but couldn’t get herself out.

After Braithwatie called police, they were able to make a quick rescue.  Police estimate she was only in the water about ten to twenty minutes.

“Had I come earlier and done my rounds and been home. She would’ve been dead. ” Said Braithwatie, “No way you should’ve survived that. I don’t think she should be alive today. There’s definitely someone watching out for her.”

The woman was taken to the hospital with treated for mild hypothermia.  Her identity will not be released.

The dogs are said to be in good condition.
