NORTH YORK, Pa. - Recovery and helping save lives were the reasons behind a naloxone giveaway in North York on Saturday. The York chapter of Not One more gave out about 100 free naloxone auto injections at the York Learning Center.

The drug can be used to reverse the effects of a heroin overdose and can be administered by family members or caregivers to treat a person they believe may have had an overdose. Nalaxone can be carried or stored in a medicine cabinet.

It's all an effort to help combat the heroin epidemic that's growing across the country.

"People are dying everyday from opioid overdose deaths," Dr. Christopher Davis said,  "and when somebody has died from an opioid overdose, you can't help them. This may save lives, and once you save someone's life,  when you bring them back from an overdose,  there's the  chance that you get them the help that they need to find recovery. "

The event was held during the screening of a documentary on heroin and opiate overdose deaths called "An American Epidemic."
