LANCASTER, Pa. – A Lancaster man will spend Christmas and New Year’s day in prison, 6 months in all, for stealing more than $60,000 from a local anti-puppy mill non-profit group. Donald L. Hostetter, 71, will serve 6 to 23 months in Lancaster County Prison, followed by 5 years of probation.
Lancaster County Judge Howard Knisely also ordered Hostetter pay back the money he took from United Against Puppy Mills Inc. between 2013 and 2014, when he was volunteer treasurer.
Also Thursday, Judge Knisely denied Hostetter’s request to defer the sentence, ordering him to prison immediately.
Hostetter previously pleaded guilty to felony theft. He hasn’t yet paid back any of the money, some of which he used for a sweepstakes scam he apparently fell victim to.
Assistant District Attorney Kevin McGarry said Hostetter is an intelligent man who should’ve known better, while asking the judge for a prison sentence. McGarry refuted Hostetter’s request for a house-arrest sentence.
