CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. – Veterans in Cumberland County will hold a vigil this weekend for U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Adam Schoeller. Sgt. Schoeller, a 2008 graduate of Boiling Springs High School, is one of 12 Marines missing after two CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters crashed during a training mission off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii on January 14.
Search and rescue efforts for the 25 year old Sergeant, who served as crew chief, and the other Marines was called off on Tuesday after five days with no sign of survivors by the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and other authorities . The operation is now in the recovery and salvage phase.
Boiling Springs Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #8851 and Marine Corps League #524 (Carlisle) will hold a short vigil and flag ceremony on Sunday at 3 pm at the Boiling Springs Veteran’s Clock Tower in his honor. The community is invited to come out in a show of support for this veteran, fellow Bubbler and his family.
In addition a gofundme account has been setup for the Adam Schoeller Family to reimburse the Semper Fi Fund which covered the family’s travel to Hawaii. The goal was to raise $5,000, and so far 204 donors have contributed over $13,500. All monies in excess of the $5,000 will be earmarked for the family to cover expenses.
Governor Tom Wolf has all flags at all state office buildings and facilities lowered to half staff in honor of Sgt. Schoeller.
