LANCASTER, Pa. -- More than 300 disabled and elderly Lancaster County residents received a much needed visit Thursday from Meals on Wheels.

The national organization which goes door-to-door to provide healthy meals, home service, and companionship has not been able to run in Lancaster since last Friday due to last weekend's severe snowstorm. Typically, Meals on Wheels volunteers delivery food to seniors and handicapped five days a week.

"We know that we need to get our services to our community and we’re doing our best to make sure that happens," said Kevin Ressler, executive director of Meals on Wheels Lancaster County. "We do send emergency meals so they have some extra food, but it does mean for three days we were not able to get them the full meals, two meals a day, that they expect."

On Thursday, Ressler had a full staff, 60 volunteers strong. After making the meals, both hot and cold, 26 different teams of people hit the road throughout the county.

"We go through a variety of terrains, a variety of conditions, so it’ll be a challenge but we’ll be glad to get out there," Ressler said.
