YORK, Pa. -- As the city of York struggles to dig out from the snow storm that hit nearly two weeks ago, crews are now dealing with a new threat: flooding.

"Snow floods the streets. We have to get the water to the drains and get the water off the streets," said City employee Albert Murray, as he worked to clear a storm drain. The combination of heavy rain over the piles of snow created a messy situation.

"Right now our public works crew is up to their knees in water, trying to get storm inlets opened up so we don't have flooding," said Steve Buffington, Deputy Director of Permits, Planning and Zoning with York City.

Murray said crews were dividing and conquering Wednesday, with some on snow removal duty, and others clearing drains. "Right now the water can't run on the curb line. It's out on the streets. I have to push it to the curb so the water can run down," said Murray. He said the biggest challenges include the snow, cars, and people. "We're doing what we can do one day at a time. We're making progress," he said.

Murray said the public clearing snow and trash from drains is a good way to help. "That's a big help," he said.
