HARRISBURG, PA –- The Department of State released a list of funeral establishments that have not renewed their facility licenses in the interest of consumer protection, according to Secretary of State Pedro A. Cortés.

The list has been posted on the Department’s website.

“When Pennsylvanians have a death in the family, they are already under a great deal of stress. They should not have to wonder whether the establishment they choose is operating lawfully,” Cortés said. “Timely renewal of a license is one indicator that the facility maintains high standards.”

All funeral establishments licensed by the State Board of Funeral Directors faced a February 1 deadline to complete their biennial renewal. The renewal period began November 9, 2015.

If a funeral establishment’s license is renewed or reactivated in the future, the name will be removed from the list, said Peter Speaks, Deputy Secretary for Regulatory Programs.

“We will update the list daily,” Speaks said. “The goal is to provide accurate information that is available immediately when needed.”

Additionally, the public can check the license status of individual funeral directors or any licensed professional at the Department’s online database.

The Department’s website, www.dos.pa.gov, includes complete regulations for the State Board of Funeral Directors and for all professional licensing boards and commissions in Pennsylvania.

Anyone who suspects unlicensed activity by an individual or facility, or who has been a victim of unethical treatment, can file a complaint either online or through the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs hotline at 1-800-822-2113.
