It seems there might be another use of the Fitbit, -it turns out the fitness tracker may be able to tell if a woman is expecting.
A couple thought the device was broken, because the calibration was off.
The husband checked into a Fitbit Reddit feed for advice saying, “My wifes fitbit is showing her heartbeat being consistently high over the last few days.”
A commenter asked if there was any chance his wife was pregnant and he replied to say that ““Pregnancy is a strong possibility, didn’t know that would jack up the heart rate. I might be a dad, YIKES. Now I gotta watch my own heart rate lol.”
Sure enough, a day later he checked back to confirm, “Im going to be a dad!”
Experts say there is a correlation between heart rate and pregnancy because the mother needs to get more blood to the uterus to support a growing baby.
And it looks like Fitbit can pick up on those increases.
More recently, the user returned to Reddit and said:
“Thank you all for your overwhelming support! Its been awesome to read all the comments and well wishes, even the comments questioning whether I am in fact the father (gotta have a sense of humor on here, right?). I just wanted to say this is indeed real, I do not work for Fitbit, this is not guerrilla marketing. This is real, the fear is real, the excitement is very real! I am a regular guy who was just looking for the community’s help with his wife’s technology issue (we’ve all been there, right?). Little did I know I got alot more than I bargained for! Now I’m a regular guy who is preparing to have his first child brought into the world, God willing, in Oct 2016.”
