MAHANOY CITY, PA —  A Schuylkill County grandmother is accused of killing one of her grandchildren, and starving another.

Police arrested Pietrina Hoffman, 52, and charged her with criminal homicide on Friday.

As she left the district magistrate’s office on Friday she told a WNEP reporter, “I didn’t do nothing. I don’t know. I don’t remember. Can we just go?”

When further questioned about a comment made that the two-year-old child stepped on the 14-month old baby, Hoffman said, “I don’t know!”

Police say one-year-old Naveah Doyle was suffocated on January 10th, and her body was left on the floor for hours before Hoffman called 911.

Hoffman had been taking care of the child, along with her two-year-old granddaughter, that police say showed early signs of starvation.

A family friend that came to Hoffman’s arraignment said that she believes that Hoffman doesn’t remember what happen.

She says the family has been trying to figure out what exactly happened that day.

Hoffman denies involvement in the child’s death, but according to court documents she was taking sleeping pills, “blacking out,” and realized the baby was dead early in the morning.

Before she called police, she says she sat down, had a cup of coffee, and phoned her husband.

Hoffman is now at the Schuylkill County jail, without bail. She faces a capital murder charge and the possibility of the death penalty.
