LANCASTER, Pa.–A Lancaster woman is facing charges after police say she left her 8-year-old son unattended inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the Park City Center last month.

Beatrice McCain, 45, of Ronks,  is charged with endangering the welfare of children and retail theft. The charges stem from incident happened on Jan. 16 after police caught her in the parking lot of the Park City Center, wearing shoes she didn’t pay for.  The sneakers, worth $55, were stolen from JCPenny, authorities said.

Investigators then found McCain’s son alone in her car with an opened can of beer. Police discovered McCain had smoked crack cocaine in the presence of her young son, according to police reports.

When an officer asked McCain when she last smoked crack, the boy said, “four hours ago.”

McCain was arrested and taken to Lancaster County prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.

At a recent preliminary hearing, District Judge Mary Sponaugle ordered McCain stand trial on counts of endangering a child and retail theft.
