WEST MANHEIM TOWNSHIP, Pa.–A firefighter died after he suffered a medical emergency while responding to a house fire in West Manheim Township on Saturday morning, according to the York County Coroner’s office.

Earl Shoemaker, 68,  was a volunteer with the Eagle Fire Company #2 with the Hanover Fire Department for more than 40 years.

Investigators say Shoemaker was driving to the scene of the house fire on the 500 block of Pumping  Station Road in West Manheim Township, when he suffered a coronary event, veered off the road and crashed.

He was taken to Hanover Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
