EAST COCALICO TWP., Lancaster County, Pa. — Seven people are charged with reckless endangerment regarding a target-shooting incident last month that seriously wounded a woman at a nearby property.
East Cocalico police charged four men and three woman who were shooting on Feb. 28 from a second-floor deck of 830 South Ridge Road.
The seven individuals fired multiple guns, apparently aiming at a tree stump in the yard of the property.
One errant round traveled about 1,600 feet and struck 22-year-old Jamie Horning, who was seated inside a home at 553 Reinholds Road.
Horning was wounded in the neck and underwent emergency treatment.
Eight other people were at the Reinholds Road home; they weren’t hurt.
These seven individuals are each charged with 9 counts of reckless endangerment:
– Vernon G. Kurtz, 28, Denver
– Kyle Sholly, 23, Denver
– Wesley Melhuish, 24, Lebanon
– Andrew Richards, 24, Denver
– Brianna Rottmund, 20, Newmanstown
– Tawny Kissinger, 26, Denver
– Amy Dunn, 34, Denver
Sholly and Richards live at the South Ridge Road home.
The round that struck Horning traveled over a field, through or over a line of trees and into a window of 553 Reinholds Road.
East Cocalico police determined the group fired 10 different weapons: 7 handguns and 3 rifles.
The group admitted to shooting over several hours. The tree stump they fired upon had no backstop in place. No other safety precautions were taken to ensure a safe shooting exercise.
East Cocalico police Detective Keith Neff filed the misdemeanor charges. The seven charged were mailed summons to appear in court. They are presumed innocent.
The investigation continues.
