LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- An Ohio family will be able to keep a beloved pit bull that has comforted a 4-year-old girl as she undergoes treatments for cystic fibrosis, despite it being considered a "dangerous breed" by the city, according to

.

The family's dog, Scrappy, has joined Aleeah Williams for all her treatments, but Scrappy is not a trained service animal.

A 2008 law in Lakewood states that "all pit bull dogs and canary dogs are deemed to be dangerous animals,” and are banned.

The Williams' family asked for an exception to be made in their case, and this week the Lakewood city council made their decision.

Aleeah and Scrappy can stay together, but her family will need to put a muzzle on him if he leaves their property.
