YORK, Pa.--  Figure skaters from five states hit the ice in York for the Keystone State Games on Saturday. Skaters from many of the ice skating clubs taking part in the event helped kick-off the start of the Figure Skating Championships at the York City Ice Arena.

The competition is open to skaters age four through 66. Many of them are from out-of-state, including Maryland, Ohio, Virginia and Delaware. Organizers say the event gives people with a passion for the sport a chance to experience a competition similar to the Olympics.

Leanne Abugov, President of the White Rose Figure Skating Club says, "Competition is very important. It motivates them to keep improving themselves to move from one level to the next higher level to the next higher level."

FOX43's Jaime Garland was happy to be a part of opening ceremonies, ringing the bell to signify the start of the games. The championships continue on Sunday and skaters who place in the event will move on to the Games of America competition.
