Flood Safety Awareness Week continues, and Wednesday's topic is the causes and severity of flooding.

There are two main causes of flooding for our region. They include excessive rainfall and snow melt combined with rainfall.

Excessive rainfall is caused by many weather setups. Heavy rain north of a warm front, slow moving downpours within thunderstorms, and tropical cyclones all bring copious amounts of rain that can lead to flooding. This can overwhelm creeks, streams, and poor drainage urban areas. Tropical systems are prolific producers of rainfall. Winds are only part of the story. These slow-moving systems bring an abundance of tropical moisture the translates to heavy amounts of rain. These systems frequently affect larger rivers too.

Snow melt combined with rainfall is a common way to experience flooding during late winter and spring. Snow's water content can be released and run off into the waterways when it melts. It can be due to rapidly warming temperatures, rain falling on snow, or both.

Stay with FOX43 Weather for more important information on flooding through the rest of the week. Stay safe!
