SHOWERS TO SUN: A cold front brings showers to the region early Friday morning, but sunshine is in the forecast. Expect scattered showers to move through the region from west to east, with the activity ending around 10 A.M. The clouds break by noon, allowing for partly sunny skies through the afternoon. The winds turn quite gusty in the wake of the front. It’s still mild, with afternoon temperatures in the lower to upper 60s. The clouds clear, and the winds fade through the evening. It’s a chilly night, with temperatures falling into the 30s.

Flood Safety Awareness Week continues today. Friday’s topic is Flood Safety.

As mentioned throughout the week, flooding causes more damage in the United States than any other weather related event. Total amounts average 4.6 billion dollars per year over the 20 years.

The best way to prepare for any flooding potential is to monitor the weather forecast on a daily basis. There are plenty of outlets to keep you informed and safe, including the National Weather Service and here at FOX43! The National Weather Service issues warning products for weather related events like flooding, and it’s a part of media outlets’ jobs to convey this important, life saving information.

Measures that you can take to prevent flood damage are available through the American Red Cross. A few basic ideas include an emergency kit. Pack it with extra medication, water, batteries, flash lights, non perishable foods, blankets, etc. in case evacuations are necessary. Also consider what to do with your pets, and be sure to have extra food and water available for them. If there is enough lead time prior to evacuations, consider moving valuable or sentimental possessions to the highest level in multiple story homes, or with trusted family members or friends not in the flood’s path.

It’s always good to have a backup plan ready ahead of time, but how do you know if you will need it? River flooding is characterized according to three stages: minor flooding, moderate flooding, and major flooding. Each category conveys a particular level of public threat and property damage. If minor flooding is forecasted, expect minimal property damage. There is some public threat or inconveniences. If moderate flooding is forecasted, some inundation of structures and roads near streams is possible. Some evacuations of people may be necessary, or the transfer of property to higher elevations. If major flooding is in the forecast, extensive inundation of structures and roads is likely. Significant evacuations of people and transfer of property to higher elevations is very likely.
