SUSQUEHANNA TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Drones reached a new level of popularity with the holiday season.

"The technology is always changing all the time with the quads, airplanes, and helicopters," Kranzel Hobbytown owner David Kranzel said.

He said they are flying off the shelves with people buying them everyday. Some of the newer ones even have a feature where they can follow you from above.

"They were very popular around the holidays as gifts," he said.

"It really sprung over night," Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesperson Travis Lau said. "This is the first year we've ever had an encounter with drone use being an issue."

He said drones were flown in places of The Middle Creek Wildlife Management that is off limits to people. This causes a disturbance to the animals. Lau said there has been disturbances to the Bald Eagles as well in parts of the state.

"Which can cause a real threat to the success of the nest regardless of the time of year," he said.

The Game Commission is looking to ban drones on state game lands. The ban is to make sure there is no damage to the nature and wildlife, according to the Game Commission. It also said the drones may interfere with the lawful hunting and trapping activities.

For drone users, Kranzel said it should not cause any issues.

"Most people are going to find somewhere else," Kranzel said.

The regulation has to be voted on by the Board of Game Commissioners. They will first vote in April and then again in June if it passes the first vote.

"When you're talking about preventing issues during nesting season, we would certainly be on track to do that next year," Lau said.
