DUNCANNON, Pa. - According to the Susquenita School District lunch policy if a student has too much debt, in their account, they are given a bagged lunch that consists of an apple, skim milk and a cheese sandwich. The Perdix Fire Company heard about a girl who could not afford a hot meal, but did not want to be seen eating the bagged one.
"She was embarrassed to get cheese sandwiches so, members of the fire department pulled money out of their pockets, notified the school, took money up to them and fed the girl the rest of the year," said Scott Howell of the Perdix Fire Company.
This year they donated $1,500 to the school and in a letter the district said they were able to assist 88 students. Now, those students will be able to get a hot meal for the rest of the year.
"Outstanding, outstanding. That's why the fire department is here help the community; help the kids," said Howell.
The fire department says they might start their donations earlier next year so all year long no student has to worry about eating bagged lunches.
