LANCASTER -- Dogs rescued from a dog meat farm are now safe at the Lancaster SPCA.

"These dogs have lived in cages their whole lives," said Susan Martin, Executive Director of the Lancaster SPCA.

The international and US branches of the Humane Society recently bought out and shutdown the meat farm in South Korea.

All 171 dogs were saved, and soon some of those animals will be ready to adopt.

Ten of the rescued dogs will come to the Lancaster SPCA, but all the dogs are already in the US and as of today, five have been brought to Lancaster from New Jersey.

"It`s very common in South Korea for those folks to eat dog meat as a delicacy there," says Martin. "It is sad but we try not to focus on the past and just look at the brightness of their future. Certainly if we focused just on their past it would probably break all of our hearts."

The dogs range in age between two and four years old. They have all been checked by a veterinarian and have received their vaccines.

Martin says, "We will keep them here just for a couple of days just to access what type of temperament they have in order to place them in a proper home."

The dogs are timid and a bit scared. It even took awhile to get them out of their transport cages. Over the next few days volunteers and employees will get them used to having love and not the fear of death in their lives.

There have been several inquires about the dogs, and their have been offers to foster. Martin says she expects they will be available for adoption within the week, but cautions that they are not for first time dog owners.  These animals have been through a lot and will need an experienced and patient owner to handle their needs.

The Lancaster SPCA does have  about two dozen other dogs that are ready to be adopted.
