YORK COUNTY, Pa. – A York Township woman faces multiple charges including DUI after she hits a convenience store gas pump and drives away. It happened last Friday, April 30 at the Turkey Hill along the 300 block of W. Broadway in Red Lion Borough.

According to the criminal complaint Kayla Lee Kauffman, 29, Pennsylvania State Police responded to call that black 2000 Jeep Cherokee hit just struck one of the gas pumps and had fled north on W. Broadway towards Dallastown Borough. It was also reported that the Jeep’s driver side door was damaged in the collision.

A State Trooper responding to another call passed the Jeep headed in the opposite direction. The Trooper turned around, caught up with the vehicle and stopped it at on Main Street, in Dallastown.

The Jeep was occupied by two females, Kauffman and a passenger. The Trooper also observed a baby in a car seat in the rear passenger seat. The baby is a eight months old. Upon checking her identification it was discovered that Kauffman’s drivers license was suspended due to a prior DUI. He also observed that she appeared sleepy, unsure of her footing, had heavy eyes, and constricted pupils. Her speech was also slow and slurred. When asked if she takes any prescription medication, she replied that she does take Suboxone. After she was asked to do a series of sobriety tests, Kauffman was placed under arrest. She later refused a BAC test.

Charges include DUI, Endangering Welfare of a Child, Driving While Operating Privilege is Suspended or Revoked, and Careless Driving.  Kauffman was arraigned and release pending a preliminary hearing later this month.

The unidentified female passenger and baby were taken to their home by another Trooper.
