Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently set long-term work zone signs announcing that Tuesday, May 10, its contractor will begin preparations to repair and resurface a 3.3-mile section of Route 17 in Perry County from U.S. 11/15 in Liverpool Borough to the intersection with Davidson Road in Liverpool Township. Some sections of Route 17 average more than 2,100 vehicles traveled daily.

The $1,547,502 contract was awarded on March 30 to Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc., of State College, Centre County, and includes drainage improvements, pipe replacement, milling and bituminous paving, guiderail replacement, new signs and pavement markings. Also included in this contract are repairs to a 3,000-foot section of Route 104 at the Perry-Juniata county line. Work under this construction contract is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.

PennDOT advises travelers that they may encounter shifting traffic patterns or single-lane traffic restrictions with flaggers assisting them through the work zone on weekdays during daylight hours for shoulder, drainage and paving operations.

May 18-20, weather permitting, it will be necessary to close a section of Route 17 for up to three days in order to replace drainage cross pipe. To avoid delays, travelers should allow for additional time in their plans and use Route 235, Witmer Road and Davidson Road as an alternate route.

Motorists are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones, not only for their safety, but for the safety of the road crews.
