HANOVER, Pa. -- Volunteers with the Hanover Fire Museum are looking for a new home for the museum. They've found one in the Old Eagle Fire Station, but are now facing roadblocks.

The new location would provide 2,000 extra square feet and is a better fit for the museum.

Warren Peter, a member of the board of directors for the museum, said, "We continuously receive artifacts from people in the community and other people who have collected Hanover fire paraphernalia."

In 2015, the borough council passed a resolution to allow the museum to move to the fire station. Volunteers started working on the station - from painting it to replacing the ceiling. But last year that changed when new council members were elected.

"We have tried to convince the borough council of the worthiness of having the museum, particularly for educating the children and also for drawing people into town," Peter said.

The Hanover zoning board voted the Old Eagle Fire Station was properly zoned. But some council members are concerned about the financial burden it would be on the borough.

Peter said, "They want to sell the building and liquidate the building and then have money that they can use to do other things with."

But he said people and businesses make plenty of donations and volunteers, so it wouldn't cost the borough much to make the switch. He recently heard rumors that someone wants to turn the building into an apartment complex.

"A building that actually housed horses and a steam engine, to take that building and to modify it into an apartment building would be painful to us," Peter said.

He is asking the community to come out to the finance meeting on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the council meetings on May 25th at 7 p.m.
