Suspect dead and Sheriff’s Deputy injured in shooting in York City

The York County Corner confirmed on Twitter that the suspect 38-year-old James Allen Nickol died at 11:38 this morning.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Michael Lutz was helping York City Police serve a warrant on the 900 block of East Philadelphia St. and when he encountered Nickol gunfire was exchanged. Both Deputy Lutz and Nickol were taken to the hospital, where Nickol later died. Deputy Lutz was shot in the face and the thumb during the encounter. He is recovering at the hospital and the Sheriff’s Office says he is in “good spirits.”

“This is definitely something unusual to happen at this location but again, you look around the world right now, there’s all kinds of things going on,” said York City Police Chief Wes Kahley. “This is just another example of the dangers our officers face every day when they go out to do their job.”

FOX43's Jennifer Ready is on scene and will have the latest on FOX43 News First at Four.
