YORK CITY, Pa. -- Five people were hit by a speeding SUV on a sidewalk in downtown York on Friday.

The crash along the 100 block of S. George Street sent all six involved, including the driver, to area hospitals with "varying degrees of injuries," according to York City Police Chief Wes Kahley.

Police believe the driver was an older man who had a medical emergency, causing him to lose control of his vehicle before speeding off the road, onto the sidewalk, and hitting five people in its path.

Two of the five people were walking out of a health care facility, according to witness Eddie Poteet, who was downtown with his children when the crash occurred just before 11:30 a.m.

"It sounded like a race car revving its engine and a building crumbling," Poteet described the scene. "Signs were flying. Trees were flying. People was running down here."

Poteet says he put his children inside his car after the SUV came to a stop, then ran across the street to help some of the victims until ambulances arrived.

"There were people laying on sidewalk everywhere," he said.

South George Street remained closed past 4 p.m. Friday as electrical crews worked to fix the street lights and electric poles damaged in the crash.

Police crews also spent the afternoon investigating the scene of the crash, although it's too early to determine if an charges would be filed against the driver, Chief Kahley said.

Anyone with video of the crash, be it from a cell phone or business storefront, is asked to contact York City Police.

"In all honesty, with the amount of people generally on the sidewalk here at this time, it could've been a lot worse," Chief Kahley said.
