DALLASTOWN, Pa. -- Dallastown Area High School's field hockey team is mourning the loss of one of their former players. Amanda Strous, 27, was killed in a fire at her apartment in North Carolina.

Investigators determined the fire was set intentionally and charged Matthew Benner with her murder.

Jeri Myers, Dallastown Area High School's field hockey coach, said when she thinks of Amanda, she thinks of a giving person with a big smile.

Strous graduated from Dallastown Area High School in 2007, where she played field hockey for all four years. Myers said she remembers Strous' passion for life and the game of hockey.

But the Dallastown alum wasn't known for the number of goals she scored.
"She had 17 goals, but she had 29 assists, so very much a team player," Myers said.

The coach said that number of assists says a lot about Strous.

"Having more, like doubling the amount of goals that you actually score, that means that she saw somebody was open. And as I always tell the person that scores the winning goal, 'Somebody had to pass you that ball,'" she said.

The team won four championships when Strous played at Dallastown. She then coach field hockey for Dallastown's Future Champs Camp.
"We always say how much she gave back to everybody else, and that's how we're going to remember Amanda. She was always giving, always hustling," Myers said.

Strous went on to play for Shippensburg University. Myers said she heard the news of Strous' death from a former player.

She was shocked.

She said she is proud Strous got her start in field hockey in Dallastown.

"We like to introduce the game and hopefully they'll get the love of it. And that's how we saw Amanda, and that's how we saw most of the coaches here that have attended a Future Champs Camp. And then they are a part of Dallastown's championship team. So like I said, it starts here as family," Myers said.
