DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa.–A Gardners woman was sentenced last week in Dauphin County Court for attempting to purchase heroin with a public assistance card, according to the Dauphin County District Attorney’s office.

Denise L. Lopez,  45, was sentenced on July 20 to six to twenty-four months in Dauphin County Prison.

Back in January, Harrisburg detectives seized a cell phone from a suspected heroin dealer.  Shortly thereafter, people called the phone in an attempt to buy heroin.

Prosecutors said Lopez and a friend called the phone and asked if they could buy heroin in exchange for a $100 ACCESS card (public assistance card).  Lopez and another female then met the undercover detective on Second Street in Harrisburg to make the deal.  During Lopez’s arrest she was found to be in possession of several hypodermic needles.

In Pennsylvania it’s a crime to trade a public assistance card for non-food items.  At sentencing, Lopez indicated that she had entered an inpatient drug rehabilitation center, prosecutors said.  As part of her sentence, Lopez was ordered to complete a six month inpatient rehabilitation program.
